Every year in early spring, the tulips bloom on Pearl Street. There are many different varieties filling most of the flower gardens along the Pearl Street Mall. At the peak of the tulip flowering, in early spring, the mall is transformed into a colorful land of blooming tulips. People come from all around to view the wide array of tulips and to take photographs.
The tulips define the first of spring for many people in Boulder. Often, it will snow on the first tulip blooms. Usually, towards the end of the tulips, there are green leaves starting to fill in the trees. It is very beautiful to see the full colors of all the tulips under the trees just starting to turn green after wintertime.
Most of the tulips bulbs are imported from Holland every year and the rest are purchased from local growers. At the end of the season, the tulip bulbs are given away to local gardeners at a tulip bulb giveaway. This event is usually in front of the court house on the Pearl Street Mall and the date is announce a couple of weeks before the giveaway.
Around the time of the peak tulip bloom, Pearl Street Mall hosts a Tulip Fairy and Elf Parade for the kids. For the parade, the kids dress up as fairies and elves and parade down the colorful mall. The parade usually starts at the east side of Pearl Street by 11th Street and travels along the Pearl Street Mall to the west end.
