Located at the mouth of Boulder Canyon, Settlers’ Park is a good short hike located close to downtown Boulder. It is fairly easy to get to the trailhead on a bike following the Boulder Creek path or riding down Pearl St. In a car, it is just off of Canyon Blvd before it goes into the mountains. The trail itself is a mostly uphill hike for about a 1/2 mile with a few nice views from the top.

At the trailhead there are a few picnic tables and bike racks. If you follow the path under Canyon Blvd, you will end up in Eben G Fine Park, which also has restrooms open during the summer months.

From the top of the trail, there is a great view of Boulder and the Red Rock formations along with views of Hogback Ridge and Sunshine Canyon on the northwest side of the hill. You can also see the chimney of the old hospital and the north end of Boulder.

When you get to the top, there is a trail to the east that follows the ridgeline and will lead back down to the main trail in a loop. You will get to a bridge that crosses a canal (Silver Creek Ditch). After the bridge, for the easiest route, stay on the west side of the trail. The other side will also go to the trailhead, but it is very steep.

I like hiking the loop by the canal, especially in the summer when it is hot out. The canal has water in summer months and trees for shade so it is cooler and is also a nice semi level area to walk on. Sometimes you can find good bird watching along this stretch of the trail. You get a good view into the trees on both sides and can usually see some Nuthatches, Chickadees and maybe even a woodpecker.

You will probably notice some of the trees in the area around the canal bridge are burnt. There was a fire along here a few years ago, but due to the great work of the fire fighters, it was put out before it spread and got too far out of hand.

Settlers’ Park is an excellent hike in the fall when the leaves are changing colors and you can see Boulder covered in multi vibrant colors. One of the best views of Boulder I have ever seen.
